It’s tricky being a person on the Internet these days. There are infinite opportunities to consume inspirational content and just as many chances to engage, message, and comment. As much as I enjoy reading and watching brilliant creators online, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve put myself out there in my personal life—a “like” is as much as I can normally muster, much less sending an entire email to a stranger, no matter how much I admire them.
And yet, I deeply enjoy and appreciate reading the long, beautiful letters that come into the Isolation Journals inbox from our beloved community each week, many of them asking for advice. Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern—they take their time, they dwell in the detail, and then they often close in an unexpected way. Here are two examples, which I took from real emails in the inbox:
