Hi friend,
I’m here today with something exciting for you—a video replay of the artist talk from the opening weekend of “The Alchemy of Blood,” my joint art exhibit with my mom, Anne Francey. Our conversation was moderated by Carmen Radley, beloved managing editor of the Isolation Journals, with extra help from my rescue pup Lentil, who joined us on stage as my emotional support legume. In our hour-long discussion, we talked about how these works came into being and the meaning we make of them. Anne had so many mic-drop moments, from the joy of aging to the high-wire act of balancing motherhood and creative work. As I listened to her, I kept choking up, both because of the power of her words and also her radical vision of the life of an artist. I was so awed by her, and I have a feeling you’ll be awed too.
I’m also thrilled to announce that ArtYard has extended our exhibit—it will be open to the public until October 6. If you make the trip to Frenchtown, NJ, and are looking for a place to get a meal, I highly recommend FiNNBAR. It’s only a short walk away from ArtYard and has a secret, off-menu cocktail, “The Lentil,” named after Frenchtown’s most famous (and perhaps only) senior hairless dog. You can find more information about the show and get tips for planning your visit here.
I’d like to end on a note of gratitude. I’ve been reading through the comments section of my last newsletter, and I’m so humbled by the kindness, love, and wisdom that emanates from this community, both toward me as I navigate this new health challenge and toward one another, and for that, I thank you. To everyone who has seen the show and also to those who aren’t able to make the trek but have supported my foray into painting from afar, I hope this conversation proves as moving and inspiring to you as it was to me.
Sending love,
Suleika
